From Tradition to Future – Strukton Rail Creates a Flexible Workplace with WeOffice

When Sweden’s largest private railway contractor identified the need for a more modern work environment, the goal was to create more than just a beautiful office.
Together with WeOffice, Strukton Rail developed a workplace strategy that reflects the company’s culture, supports employees in their daily work, strengthens collaboration, and prepares the headquarters for future ways of working.

Background – a leading player moving forward

Strukton Rail AB plays a central role in keeping Sweden’s railway system in motion.
As part of the Dutch Strukton Groep NV, the company plans, builds, and maintains rail traffic infrastructure throughout the country.
With high competence and a strong sense of responsibility, the organisation drives progress through innovation.

As the business grew, it became clear that the old Stockholm headquarters no longer supported the new ways of working.
The premises were designed for a more traditional office culture.
Now, the company wanted to create an environment that better reflected its culture, ambitions, and forward-looking mindset — a workplace that both employees and visitors could feel proud of.

The challenge – creating a workplace that meets diverse needs

Strukton Rail identified several development needs:

  • More focused work areas and quiet rooms
  • Modern technology for both physical and digital meetings
  • Flexibility to adapt the space over time
  • A sense of community and well-being that strengthens company culture

Different departments also had varying requirements — from HR’s need for confidentiality to the safety team’s demand for changing facilities.
To succeed, a holistic workplace strategy was essential.

From vision to reality

WeOffice approached the assignment using its evidence-based Workplace Adequacy™ Framework.
Together with Strukton Rail, a structured process was initiated in which vision, employee perspectives, and data formed the foundation for the future workplace.

The Vision

The shared vision, defined in a leadership workshop, was clear: To create a flexible, attractive, and enjoyable environment that inspires and supports employees — a place that strengthens community, enables collaboration, and allows for focus when needed.

The process

Employee input played a central role. Through focus groups, the “My Day at Work” workshop, and the Workplace Adequacy™ Survey, valuable insights were gathered about needs, working styles, and well-being factors. These insights were combined with occupancy data and analyses of work patterns, resulting in a clear, business-tailored plan for the future office — right-sized, flexible, and aligned with organisational culture.

Implementation

Once the strategy was in place, WeOffice took full responsibility for implementation.
This included location search, lease negotiation, interior design concept, project management, cost estimation, and procurement support.

WeOffice ensured that Strukton Rail’s interests were safeguarded throughout negotiations with the landlord and contractors.
In parallel, a structured change management process was implemented to engage employees and prepare them for the transition.
In this way, the vision and strategy were turned into reality — with WeOffice leading the project from start to finish.

The transformation in practice – a workplace for every need

As the strategy and implementation took shape, it became clear that the new headquarters would be built around distinct zones providing clarity and choice:

  • Green zones – open areas for interaction, digital meetings, and spontaneous conversations
  • Orange zones – quieter areas for short, informal collaboration
  • Red zones – completely silent areas for concentration and confidentiality

The office was equipped with ergonomic furniture, height-adjustable desks, dual monitors, and modern meeting technology.
Smaller soundproof rooms allow for uninterrupted digital meetings, and a dedicated studio was created for video and audio production.

Well-being and sustainability were also key priorities.
Generous social areas encourage informal interactions, while showers and changing rooms make life easier for cyclists and field staff.
Greenery, proximity to public transport, and well-planned storage solutions contribute to a workplace that is both functional and pleasant

The result – a future-proof workplace

Strukton Rail’s new headquarters is far more than a physical space.
It is a flexible, sustainable, and representative platform for the entire organisation – a place that bridges the company’s proud tradition with the needs of the future.

The benefits are clear:

  • Right-sized: Designed for a typical working day, neither over- nor under-dimensioned.
  • Flexible: Can accommodate future organisational changes without costly refurbishments.
  • Attractive: A workplace where people genuinely want to be.
  • Representative: Strengthens Strukton Rail’s brand and identity.
  • Sustainable: Promotes both employee well-being and resource efficiency.

Voices from the collaboration

“Strukton Rail showed great courage by thinking long-term and involving the entire organisation in the change process.
Through our evidence-based approach, we were able to anchor decisions in both facts and employee experience.
Together, we didn’t just create new premises – we created a workplace that strengthens the culture and paves the way for future ways of working.”
Aram Seddigh, CEO and Certified Workplace Strategist, WeOffice

“The new office has become a harmonious and creative space where different working styles and needs have been embraced.
It is also beautifully designed – simple and minimalist throughout the meeting rooms, work areas, and cafeteria, yet it retains the company’s soul.”
Cecilia Romare, Head of Communications, Strukton Rail
